Week 8, 2024

We’ll miss you, Golden Swing. Here’s what we found interesting this week.

We’re always looking to improve the newsletter. Have feedback? Content recommendations? Reach out to us at [email protected].

  • Eliza’s Rundown

Why It’s Interesting: If you like a few laughs to go along with your tennis coverage, you need to follow Liza West. Here, she recaps a particularly off-the-rails week in the tennis world. Gill may or may not have been one of the “culty” Avatar fans who messaged her.
  • Jannik Sinner’s Vanity Fair Interview

Why It’s Interesting: Hit that translate button. Jannik comes across as insanely down to earth here. I don’t think we have to worry about stardom ever distracting him from his tennis goals.
  • Men’s Top 20 Serve Speed & Accuracy

Why It’s Interesting: It’s really hard to evaluate spot serving with the naked eye. Thank goodness we have Tennis Insights to help us out.
  • No Instagram = ATP 250 Semi-finalist

Why It’s Interesting: Joao Fonseca made a splash in Rio this past week. The 17 year old is clearly way more disciplined than your average teenager. We love to see it.
  • The Magic 54%

Why It’s Interesting: All tennis players across all levels need to understand this. The players who DOMINATE still don’t win that many more points than their opponents. Thanks for the reminder, Craig.
  • A South American Swing?

Ben’s Take: Did you see those fans in Rio during Thiago Seyboth Wild & Joao Fonseca’s matches?! Electric!

Gill’s Take: the only part of Murray’s tweet I disagree with is the “unpopular opinion part.” But I must say, there’s zero chance the next Masters goes to South America with Saudi Arabia still clamoring for one themselves.

This week’s Monday Match Analysis covered the championship Sunday action in Rio, Los Cabos and Doha:

Hey everyone, Gill Gross here. While I’m grateful for any amount of success I’ve had talking tennis on the internet for the past half decade, I believe we should all be doing better in this sport as creators and as fans. The tennis content economy is far behind other sports by metrics of engagement and popularity. This newsletter is our effort to DRAW the great things we find in tennis every week- we search for content that teaches us, makes us think, makes us laugh and ultimately makes loving this sport the best possible experience. Our vision is to speed up the growth of a robust content economy in tennis, for the benefit of fans, players and creators alike.
