Week 18, 2024

Andrey Rublev’s back as a Masters 1000 Champion! Here’s what we found interesting this week:

So Much Challengers Content

  • So When Would The Saudi Masters 1000 Be?

Why It’s Interesting: There’s no natural option.
  • Inside the Women’s Madrid SF Numbers

Why It’s Interesting: Tennis Inside Numbers did a great job of breaking down the Sabalenka & Rybakina Madrid SF. What proved to be a very close match came down to Sabalenka making a few less errors, and of course playing a flawless 3rd set tiebreak.
  • Jack Draper 🤝 Coach Wayne Ferreira

Gill’s Take: British media has been far too impatient with Jack Draper’s progress. He has moved up 20 rankings spots so far this year, and has remained healthier than ever. That’s no disaster. That said, I’m among those who thought even bigger things would be in store for a healthy Draper this year. I’m really glad to see him bring on Ferreira as a consultant, who’s work with Frances Tiafoe I heartily admired.
  • Ben Rothenberg Airs His Frustrations With The State of Women’s Tennis

Why It’s Interesting: Money isn’t the only thing that matters. Agree or disagree with this opinion piece, it’s refreshing to hear some different issues brought to the table and it’s rare to see the prize money topic discussed with such candor.
  • Fran Cerundolo Would Like To Remind Us That Tennis Players Have Sh** Going On Too

  • Djokovic Is Hoping To Turn Back The Clock With Physio Change

What Happened: Djokovic has re-hired the familiar Gebhard Gritsch, who served as his physio from 2009-2019. Gritsch was also Tomas Muster’s fitness guru.
  • Madrid Social Team Forces The Two-Handers to Switch 🤣

One Question: Why did they all start grunting like Thiem?

On this week’s Monday Match Analysis, Gill breaks down Andrey Rublev's triumphant comeback win over Felix Auger-Aliassime 2024 Mutua Madrid Masters final. Gill talked about why Rublev called it the "most proud" title he's ever won and discussed the key dynamic in the match. Gill also did the 2nd edition of the French Open Power Rankings.

Hey everyone, Gill Gross here. While I’m grateful for any amount of success I’ve had talking tennis on the internet for the past half decade, I believe we should all be doing better in this sport as creators and as fans. The tennis content economy is far behind other sports by metrics of engagement and popularity. This newsletter is our effort to DRAW the great things we find in tennis every week- we search for content that teaches us, makes us think, makes us laugh and ultimately makes loving this sport the best possible experience. Our vision is to speed up the growth of a robust content economy in tennis, for the benefit of fans, players and creators alike.
